introduction to attunement
I was stretching and chatting in a yoga group with teenagers today. I'm a yoga teacher in a specific setting - mental health recovery. I am aware that teens need to express themselves in many ways as they integrate into a class they didn't choose. In this group, I hold the space to sense our body's response to making different postures. And to notice, with curiosity, some conversation helps. But my role is to direct them back to the stretches when they become overly distracted. Talking can override awareness of where the body occupies its space, where tension is held, and where the right edge of a stretch may be.
When I am in a Somatic Experiencing session, I am in a similar role. Having a conversation with you is part of the session. But the objective of our time is to increase the elegance of your noticing practice. How does your noticing practice differ from a yoga class to a Somatic Experiencing session?
During a Somatic Experiencing, we may or may not move so much. I’m not guiding you like in a yoga class. I’m holding the space for you, to be with you. I may offer invitations to hold postures you naturally make, or to leave those postures with a steady release. I may invite you to vocalize or make a statement. But it’s all led by what you notice surfacing in your body, and how I sense my role of support. We call this resonance, when we can sense another’s nervous system and where they are in their range of instinct and consciousness.
Somatic means relating to or affecting the body. And as mammals on planet Earth, we have a particular ability to sense with more than just our eyes, ears, nose and skin. We receive information with our whole body. (I have a lot more to say about this and how connection to the soil, plants and animals can grant rebirth, health and acceptance of death.)
As we live, and the experiences of our lives accumulate, we can hold patterns in our perceptions, muscle memory or emotional range that affect our capacities. We can become skillful again and again in our natural ability to be resonant with what’s happening around us. We can decide what we are taking in. (Yes, even while using social media.) We can become resonant to what is ours, what is not ours and what is in the space between.
Attunement to your Self is a physiological process. Attunement is a state of coherence within your own body, mind and heart. Attunement is claiming vitality and choice. Attunement is knowing that seemingly conflicting emotions can inhabit the same moment and perhaps even dance in sweet spiraling release.
We have the ability to sense subtle messages from our bodies which can coalesce with our wise mind and life experience.
Through Attunement we have the ability to inhabit our power.
The clients I have been working with in the past few weeks have observed these benefits after our sessions:
Knowing which health care providers are misaligned and those who are appropriate to provide their care.
Stating boundaries verbally and non-verbally.
Choosing new recreation and entertainment to support their spirit.
Clearer decisions on what responsibilities to take on and which to set down.
